Princess Diana

5 Times Princess Diana was the most bad-ass member of the British royal family

Diana

Princess of Wales, Diana, was undeniably classy, poised, and well-spoken but also she was kind of a badass.

Here are 5 times Diana proved she was a force to be reckoned with in the royal family.

Whether she was shaking up tradition by changing her wedding vows or revealing the cracks in her fairy-tale marriage, Diana had moments of true bravery and backbone.

1. When she admitted that she never wanted to be queen

During her interview with BBC, she accepted that she didn’t see herself as ” the queen of this country”. Rather she stated that she’d “like to be a queen of people’s hearts.” Diana further added “I do things differently because I don’t go by a rule book because I lead from the heart and not the head. And albeit that’s gotten me into trouble in my work, but someone’s gotta go out there and love people.”

2. When she gave birth in a hospital

New royal babies were always born at home — that is until Diana decided that she’d rather switch things up. Prince William became the first British royal ever to be born in a hospital in June 1982. Two years later, William’s younger brother, Prince Harry, was born in the same hospital, as were Prince William’s children.

3. Diana helped remove the stigma surrounding HIV and AIDS

She was reputed for getting up close and personal during her official appearances. In April 1987, she also became the first member of the British royal family to come directly in contact with a person suffering from HIV/AIDS without any protection.

Diana shook the hand of a dying AIDS patient without actually wearing any sort of gloves. “HIV does not make people dangerous to know,” she said in a speech. “You can shake their hands and give them a hug. Heaven knows they need it.”

4. When she confronted Camilla Parker Bowles about her affair With Charles

Princess Diana fondly recalled in 1992 interview: “one of the bravest moments” of her marriage — a deliberate confrontation with Camilla Parker Bowles at a 40th birthday party for Camilla’s sister. It was in the year1989. Diana learned that Charles and Camilla had reignited their love affair. After placing the pieces together, Diana decided to roll up at the event unannounced and talk to Camilla face to face. She even admitted to being “terrified” of Camilla and stayed “calm” during the confrontation.

5. When she wore the infamous “Revenge Dress”

Diana participated in a Vanity Fair dinner at London’s Serpentine Gallery on June 29, 1994. For the event, she preferred to wear what would become one of her most memorable and statement-making looks: a formfitting black off-the-shoulder,” revealed her former stylist, Anna Harvey. “And she did.” The audacious look would go on to be dubbed “The Revenge Dress.”
