Throwback to the time when Meghan Markle was shortlisted to be a Bond girl

Meghan Markle was among the front runners to play a Bond girl in the forthcoming 25th instalment of franchise.

All this was before Prince Harry’s relationship with Meghan Markle took her out of the running – The Sun suggests.

According to the publication, Bond producers had selected Meghan markle on a shortlist of five ‘rising stars’ who might be suitable to act adjacent to Daniel Craig. The movie would later be named No Time To Die. Though, when news disclosed of her relationship with Harry in the latter half of 2016, they were compelled to rethink, and removed her from contention.

A source linked in the production team alleged: ‘Meghan fits the character of a Bond girl perfectly. She’s glamorous, beautiful and a good actress.’ ‘The role more recently has gone to actresses believed to be rising stars, and Meghan Markle unquestionably was seen as that before her relationship with Prince Harry became public. The brief was to find a charismatic rising star, particularly someone American or Canadian,’ they added.

‘The Producers had narrowed down her and four other actresses on a shortlist last year [in 2016] with Bond 25 in mind. But when her relationship with Harry became public they assumed she was out of the running’ the source further revealed.

We now acknowledge, of course, that Lashana Lynch and Ana de Armas took the roles that were, at least in the early stages, up for grabs. ‘Her engagement soon after meant an end to her acting career too’ the source concluded.

In the first interview with her fiancé (now husband, Prince Harry) after the formal declaration of their engagement, Meghan sincerely revealed that she was quite ready to give up her acting after finishing up her role on Suits. ‘I see it as a new change, a new chapter,’ she said. ‘I’ve been working on my show seven years, we were so fortunate to have that longevity and I feel like I checked that box and am very proud of the work I’ve done there.’

Meghan Markle, who has earlier served as a UN women’s advocate, has since concentrated on philanthropy, but has not left acting for good: she recently recorded a voiceover for a Disney documentary.

No Time To Die will be in cinemas soon, having been delayed by the coronavirus pandemic. With No Time To Die likely to be Daniel Craig’s final outing, maybe the Duchess could be Bond herself? Now that would make film history.
