Prince William and Kate Middleton were just good friends before romance started to bloom and caught the public eyes.
Duchess Kate first got to know when Prince William paid for the date in a charity auction, she reveals.
Kate Middleton and Prince William are now happily married. They are the proud parents of Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. With rumours of a fourth pregnancy going around, it seems Prince William and Kate Middleton are still very much in love after their royal wedding in 2011. When the couple met in 2001, they were both first-year students at the University of St Andrews and were initially firm friends, before romance began to blossom.
During a candid interview back in 2013 Duchess Kate revealed that before they officially became a couple, William actually paid to go on a first date with her. She further added: “Despite the cosy friendship and camaraderie between us, there were two instances that got tongues wagging that there might be something more between us”.

Kate Middleton described it as “an extravagant Harry Potter-themed birthday party” that took place in their first term at university. It was held in Wemyss Castle nearby and everyone had to wear a costume and bring a bottle and a sleeping bag.

There was a charity auction and William paid £200 for a date with Kate. Later both of them danced together. Kate Middleton jokingly recalled, “one of the female partygoers was overtly flirting with William”. “It was getting awkward so I walked across the room and put both my arms around him so he was able to say to the girl, ‘sorry, I have a girlfriend”.
University friend of the pair, Laura Warshauer, told The Royal UK: “This was in October. School started in September! “I remember thinking no one else could have pulled that off. It was so natural. They had each other’s backs.”

The royal couple remained good friends, however, until a breakthrough moment when Prince William first began to see his future wife in a romantic way. Kate Middleton was modelling in a student fashion show when she walked the catwalk in a see-through dress with black underwear, and “an ice-cold high-fashion pout”. Prince William who was sitting in the front row whispered to his friend: “Wow, Kate’s hot!”
