It’s not every day that a royal baby is born, so there are many royal traditions.
Today, The Royal UK decided to dig a bit deeper into what really happens when a Royal baby arrives. We, present you with 10 Royal Baby traditions, which you would find quite shocking.
AT-HOME BIRTHS USED TO BE THE NORM.
For decades the Royals gave birth at home itself. Queen Elizabeth II was born at a private family home in London. She herself gave birth to her sons Charles, Andrew, and Edward at the Buckingham Palace.
A WITNESS WAS TO BE PRESENT IN THE DELIVERY ROOM.
When Queen Elizabeth was born, the home secretary was present in the delivery room. This centuries-old tradition required someone to be present to confirm that a Royal birth was actually happening. This custom, however, ended before the birth of Prince Charles in 1948.

Furthermore, Princess Diana started a new birthing tradition.
Both Prince William and Prince Harry were born at St. Mary’s Hospital in a private Wing. The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate gave birth to Prince George and Princess Charlotte there as well.

FATHERS WERE NOT ALLOWED INSIDE THE DELIVERY ROOM.
Up until the birth of Prince Charles, fathers were not allowed inside the delivery room. For centuries, ‘birthing’ was known as an all-female event and the males would remain outside of the delivery room.
MIDWIVES HAVE TO BE PRESENT IN THE DELIVERY ROOM.
According to the reports, Kate Middleton had three midwives accompany her during the birth of Princess Charlotte. All of them were sworn to secrecy.
BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT DISPLAYED ON AN EASEL OUTSIDE THE PALACE.
The announcement of the baby’s arrival is made through an easel in front of Buckingham Palace. However, Prince William and Kate chose to announce Prince George’s birth via email and Twitter before the easel had been posted.

The protocol dictated that Prince William call his grandmother on an encrypted phone upon Prince George’s birth.
A DESIGNATED ROYAL OB-GYN PERFORMS THE BIRTH.
His name is Marcus Setchell. He reportedly postponed his retirement to deliver Prince George. He is also the Queen’s obstetrician-gynaecologist. In the past, Sir George Pinker delivered Prince William and Prince Harry.

BREASTFEEDING IS A TRADITIONAL PRACTICE FOR ROYAL MOTHERS.
Queen Elizabeth breastfed her children and so did Princess Diana. According to the reports, Kate Middleton has done the same. Although it’s not officially confirmed.
THE CHRISTENING GOWN HAS HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE.
For eight generations, the same christening gown has been worn as a replica of the one used in 1841 during Queen Victoria’s reign. Sixty-two royal babies have worn this original gown.
