In an emotional birthday message she acknowledged the fact that she found it really hard to ignore the “very sombre mood” across the nation. On the day of her official birthday, she was quoted saying while today is “traditionally a day of celebration” she was, like others, still in shock.
She said: “Today is traditionally a day of celebration. This year, however, it is difficult to escape a very sombre national mood.
“In recent months, we have witnessed a succession of terrible tragedies.”
Accompanied by the Duke of Cambridge, she visited west London on Monday after a lethal fire claimed the lives of at least 30 people at the Grenfell Tower.
She also visited survivors of the Manchester Arena terror attack in May. The Queen also attended a memorial service for the victims of this month’s London Bridge and Borough Market atrocity.
The Queen added: “As a nation, we continue to pray for all those who have been directly affected by these events.
“During recent visits in Manchester and London, I have been deeply struck by the immediate inclination of people. We will try to offer comfort and support to those in desperate need.
“Put to the test, the United Kingdom has responded in a bold manner.
“We all are united in our sadness. We are equally determined, without fear, to fight against any kind of terrorism. To support all those affected by injury and loss is our duty.”
