Queen Elizabeth is the world’s longest-reigning monarch—and for all the years she’s occupied the throne, one man has constantly been by her side.
This year, Her Majesty and the Duke of Edinburgh celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary.
The eldest royal couple recreated the portraits when they posed for when their engagement was first announced to the public.
Queen Elizabeth, herself, unravels the history of her love life.
Theirs is one of the royal family’s most enduring love stories. And this love story began almost 80 years ago from today. Victoria Arbiter, a royal commentator explained:-
“The first pivotal meeting was in 1939. It was when Elizabeth and her sister, Margaret went with their parents to the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth”.
“The princesses were escorted around the property by an 18-year-old blonde-haired blue-eyed midshipman, Prince Philip. He was charged with taking care of the girls while the royal parents were off doing their duties”.

Yet this time, the Prince of Greece and Denmark, Philip left a lasting impact on the then-13-year-old princess. Juliet Rieden, author of The Royals in Australia says:-
“She was totally in lust, I think. He was devilishly handsome. People at the time said that he looked like a Greek God, this shock of blonde hair, he was very tall and was very muscular”.
“During the weekend in Dartmouth, Philip joined the royal visitors for meals of shrimp and banana split on their royal yacht”.

He was an aide to the King who was along for the trip. Although, it would be several years before the couple began dating properly, Arbiter believes their love story truly began with that visit.
“It’s been widely reported that Her Majesty was smitten the minute she met him. That was it”, she tells The Royal UK.
“Of course, she was only 13 and he was 18. And so, they wrote letters to each other while he was off on naval service. They were writing to each other all the time”.
Elizabeth and Philip were reunited properly several years later.
