Here are the most prominent royals who gave up their titles:

  • King Edward VIII

He was perhaps the most famed among the British monarchy to abdicate his throne. King Edward VIII became king of the United Kingdom following the death of his father, George V. He abdicated his throne to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson in 1936. This duo also stayed together until Edward’s death in 1972.

  • Prince Phillip

We all very well know that Prince Phillip was a royal. But the Prince from Denmark decided to quit his royal title to marry Queen Elizabeth. He had no choice but to forgo his Denmark title to accept the English one.

  • Princess Anne

Queen Elizabeth and Phillip’s only daughter Princess Anne also married commoner Mark Phillips. The Queen offered the status of Earldom to Mark Phillips, but, he turned down the offer.

  • Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

They are the most recent royals to reject titles. The couple were told they couldn’t gain monetary independence while remaining members of the royal family.

They decided not to use their HRH titles in an official capacity as they start a new life in Canada. Initially, the couple said they intended to “step back” from their senior roles, and still carry out duties on behalf of the Queen. However, later they decided to do this without public funds.
