How Kensington Palace has let the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan down?

Kensington Palace

For the past year, Kensington Palace has been guilty of a truly astonishing breach of its duty of care towards the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle.

So, what is it that the Kensington Palace did to the soon-to-be royal mother, Meghan, that was unfair? Did they make the Duchess of Sussex unhappy?

When the first time, it was discovered that Prince Harry was dating Meghan Markle, at the time, not many people knew about the American actress. But, that all changed very fast. Within minutes of news breaking that Harry had been secretly dating Meghan, her name was trending on Google.

The media was following all the time.

Within hours, Meghan Markle’s Toronto house was surrounded by press and within days, Kensington Palace had taken the highly unusual step. They out out an extraordinary press release lambasting the ‘sexist and racist’ attacks and ‘wave of abuse and harassment’ that the then 35-year-old was facing.

So now, here we are, almost 2 years later and Kensington Palace is only putting out guidelines about how they plan to try and deal with the tsunami of abuse that Meghan and Kate are facing on Twitter and Instagram.

While Kate Middleton is the subject of some vile abuse, it is Meghan Markle, who identifies as bi-racial. And, who seems to receive the lion’s share of the hate and torment.

Today, the Palace released its ‘Social Media Community Guidelines’.

It is a brief document that basically stipulates users aren’t allowed to be racist. Or to promote discrimination based on religion, nationality, disability, sexual orientation or age.

Failure to adhere to these rules will see users’ comments deleted, their profiles blocked or even being reported to the police. But, why Kensington Palace took this decision so late?

Well, the royals have a veritable army of press officers, media relations advisers and communications directors. And so, all this process takes a little it of time.

Kate and Meghan have bee on the target since a long time now.

January it was revealed that both the royal brides were facing a torrent of abuse from internet trolls. And the Kensington social media staff had to delete each comment manually. It was also revealed that the Palace had directly contacted Twitter and Instagram for help countering the online hate.

However, all of this feels like too little, too late. A sternly worded PDF might be a step in the right direction. Now, we just hope that the steps that are taken by the Palace helps in a good way.
