William and Kate were firm friends at university together in 2001. However, ‘tongues were wagging’ when the couple paid on first date in a charity auction.
After so many years, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, William and Kate are now the proud parents of Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
With rumours of a fourth pregnancy rife, it seems Prince William and Kate Middleton are still very much in love. When the royal pair met in 2001, they were both first-year students at the University of St Andrews. They both were initially firm friends, before their romance began to blossom.
The royal couple has long history.
Royal author Marcia Moody, in her 2013 book: ‘Kate: A Biography’, revealed a lot of things. One of those things were that before they officially became a couple, William actually paid to go on a first date with Kate.

Ms Moody wrote in her book: “Despite the cosy friendship and camaraderie between William and Kate, there were two instances that got tongues wagging that there might be something more between them”.
“There was an extravagant Harry Potter-themed birthday party that took place in Wemyss Castle. Everyone had to wear a costume, bring a bottle and a sleeping bag. There was a charity auction too. And Prince William paid £200 for a date with Kate Middleton”.

The royal biographer also recalls another incident.
It was at a student house party. Ms Moody wrote: “One of the female party-goers was overtly flirting with the Duke of Cambridge. It was getting really awkward. Kate walked across the room and put both her arms around him. She did it so he was able to say to the girl, ‘sorry, I have a girlfriend'”.
University friend of the pair, Laura Warshauer, told the royal author: “This was in October. School started in September. I remember thinking no one else could have pulled that off. It was so very natural. They really had each other’s backs”.
The pair remained good friends.
However, it was until a breakthrough moment, when Prince William first began to see his future wife in a romantic light. Ms Moody wrote how Kate Middleton was modelling in a student fashion show.
It was when she walked the catwalk in a see-through dress with black underwear, and “an ice-cold high-fashion pout”. She also reports how the Duke of Cambridge, William, who was seated in the front row, whispered to one of his friend: “Wow, Kate’s hot”!
