For any groom, finding the right thing to say to a bride’s father after he walks her down the aisle is life’s biggest ‘nervous sweats’ moments.
So now, just imagine what it was like for the Duke of Cambridge, William when he wed the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate at Westminster Abbey in 2011.
Every movement Prince William made on his big day was watched. And, not only by the guests sitting in the abbey, but tens of millions more around the world tuning in via TV broadcasts and online streams. With this in mind, it’s no wonder why he decided to crack a joke as his future father-in-law approached the altar with Kate on his arm.
According to royal biographer Marcia Moody, the prince turned to Michael and said:-
“Just a quiet family wedding, then”. Given that there were almost 2000 sitting inside the Westminster Abbey at that moment, it was an apt remark.

This particular tid-bit has been drawn from Moody’s 2013 book: ‘Kate: A Biography’. However, plenty of other royal wedding anecdotes have trickled out over the years.

For instance, journalist Duncan Larcombe once recalled seeing William duck into a room, accompanied by Harry, to compose himself ahead of Kate Middleton’s arrival.

He said: “They both walked straight past us and William looked absolutely terrified. They came out afterwards and gave out a deep breath”.
Royal biographer, Katie Nicholl has also revealed the Best Man speech delivered by Harry:-
“He ribbed his brother: ‘Prince William didn’t have a romantic bone in his body before he met Kate Middleton. So, I knew it was serious when William suddenly started cooing down the phone at Kate”‘.
Really committing to the good-natured brotherly roasting, Prince Harry then mimicked his elder brother calling Kate “Babykins”. Funny things aside, Nicholl said Harry’s “warm and affectionate” words prompted the now Duchess of Cambridge, Kate to shed a tear.
