Kate Middleton Meghan Markle Prince Harry Prince William

Why It’s okay for Harry and Meghan to hold hands in public, but not for William and Kate?

Hands

When you’re a member of the royal family, there are a few sets of royal rules and protocols that you need to follow.

Everything from your clothes, hands to food etiquette is very much scrutinized.

If you haven’t spent the last few years closely watching every move of Prince William and Kate Middleton, the common rule is they don’t hold hands. In fact, in their ten years of the royal marriage, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have hardly been photographed so much as holding hands.

Once, when William led Kate Middleton out of Westminster Abbey by the hand. It was the royal protocol, and the other when the two walked hand-in-hand to their awaiting helicopter to fly off on their honeymoon.

The same is not the case with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry- They are observed acting very casually. They are seen holding hands, kissing each other on the cheek, and even stealing a lip-lock. According to the reports, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are being allowed to act out their various bouts of PDA.

So, why the double-standard? Well, there are a few things you all should know about.

William and Kate are more visible.

While Harry and Meghan are in the public eye all most all the time, they are not quite in the position that William and Kate are in. When the time comes, William and Kate will be the King and Queen Consort. Thus, the responsibility of the throne will fall on them. Therefore, it is expected that William and Kate act every time a royal couple should.

Prince Harry, on the other hand, is sixth in line to the throne. This also means that his position is extremely visible and important, but is not quite as important.

The Duke and Duchess have less to prove.

After some decent years of marriage, Kate Middleton and Prince William are very much steady in their relationship. They’re certainly unbreakable. And as Robin Kermode, a body language expert notes, “they do not feel the need to prove their love”.

It’s not as if Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are out there to ‘prove’ anything in particular. But they are still in the early years of their marriage. There, embracing and kissing each other is quite common.
