An innocent comment from Harry and Meghan, sending their love to Princess Charlotte, has sparked the ire of some watchers keen on making something out of nothing.
It was a simple message to wish their niece a very Happy Birthday. However, it turned out to be a disaster for the soon-to-be parents.
May 2 was the fourth birthday of Princess Charlotte. And to mark the occasion, Kensington Palace shared three new photos on the official Instagram account of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The account belonging to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, @sussexroyal, was quick to send their own congratulations to the princess.
What was the message?
The message from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Harry and Meghan read: “Happy birthday Charlotte! Lots of love, H and M xo”. They also included a birthday cake and balloon emojis. But the sweet comment quickly attracted some negative replies because Charlotte wasn’t referred to as a ‘Princess’ by her uncle and aunt.

Another user wrote: “Even if they are related through Harry, she needs to call her Princess if other royals call her that. This isn’t because they’re related, it’s about respect”. While another royal fan commented, saying: “So why they call her princess? Because it’s a sign of respect! Even Queen’s account calls her princess. That’s Princess Charlotte to you”.
So, there were a lot of harsh comments for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Well, it’s true all the other official royal accounts, referred to the birthday girl as “Princess Charlotte”. However, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are known for their informality. Last month for Prince Louis’ first birthday, they did not address him as “Prince”.
But etiquette expert, William Hanson says the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are entitled to drop the royal titles. And that’s because they are related. He told The Royal UK:-
“Their Instagram has already been noted for its lightness in tone and more relaxed nature with the captions than with other royal social media accounts. For everyone else, the correct form with Princess Charlotte is to refer to her as such. And in direct conversation as ‘Your Royal Highness'”.
